Handheld Biopen Can Draw Stem Cells to Repair Cartilage

There are about 50 million people worldwide with doctor-diagnosed arthritis. That number is expected to rise to 67 million by 2030. Arthritis is a disease of the joint where the cartilage between the joints breaks down and makes movement painful and can require orthopedic surgery. The average orthopedic surgeon performs 29 procedures each month the most common procedures are sports medicine, hand surgery and joint replacement. What if an orthopedic surgeon didn’t have to use a scalpel to operate when [...]

Scientists Discover a New Kind of Stem Cell

There’s a new stem cell in town: induced XEN, or iXEN. Scientists thought for years they were a byproduct of other developing stem cells, but researchers have now determined that they are their own type of cell with their own function, according to a study published last week in the journal Stem Cell Reports. You’ve probably heard of pluripotent stem cells, ones with the unique ability to transform into any kind of cell in the body. Scientists wanted to understand [...]

Stem Cell Gene Therapy Restores Immune System Response

GIOSTAR Colombia reports that researchers have found that after testing five SCID-X1 patients who received both gene therapy and low-dose chemotherapy, four of the patients showed improvements in immune function. Scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) have come up with a new gene therapy that can restore immunity. The standard treatment would include a transplant of stem cells, which can be obtained from the direct family members. Only one of them unfortunately perished, due to [...]
