Drug Prices Keep Rising

From the campaign trail to the halls of Congress, drug makers have spent much of the last year enduring withering criticism over the rising cost of drugs. It doesn’t seem to be working. In April alone, Johnson & Johnson raised its prices on several top-selling products, including the leukemia drug Imbruvica, the diabetes treatment Invokana, and Xarelto, an anti-clotting drug, according to a research note published last week by an analyst for Leerink, an investment bank. Other major companies that have [...]

Alzheimer’s and Stem Cell

Some Alzheimer’s disease researchers are using stem cells in a novel way—as a model of the disease outside the human body, enabling more efficient testing of experimental drugs in the lab rather than in clinical trials with people. Finding a drug to slow the onset of Alzheimer’s, the major cause of dementia in older people, has been frustratingly elusive. That is partly because animal testing, where most research begins, doesn’t often produce results that predict very well what will happen [...]

If there was ever a woman on a mission, it’s Laura Dominguez. Doctors once told her she’d never walk again. And while she’s not ready to run a marathon, she’s already proving them wrong, with the best yet to come. Stem Cells and Autism

Stem cells are primal cells that can divide and differentiate to become like any other more specialized cells in your body. The three types of stem cells are embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells and cord blood stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are the most controversial because they are harvested from human embryos, while the other stem cells can be obtained from adult tissue or from the umbilical cord and placenta of newborn babies and their mothers without damage to [...]

Colombia is experiencing a significant increase in medical tourism. Hospital in Medellín is ranked among the best in Latin America. Foreigners coming to Colombia for medical treatment in 2015 spent approximately $316 million, up from $134 million in 2012. Bogotá and Medellín are major destinations on the global medical tourism map. Costs in Colombia can be significantly less than costs in the U.S. For example, a heart bypass surgery in the U.S. that may cost $80,000 or more costs only [...]

Breast Cancer Cells Flushed Out of Hiding

Scientists have uncovered a molecular key that breast cancer cells use to gain access to bone marrow, where they hide from the effects chemotherapy or hormonal therapies. The results of the mouse studies are published in Science Translational Medicine. New findings could prevent women who survive breast cancer from facing a relapse years later. Not only have the researchers managed to prevent the cells from using this escape tactic, but they have succeeded in flushing the cells out into the [...]

Investors have poured $622.5 million into Colombia’s bond market since the start of the year, the biggest inflow into any emerging-market country so far in 2014, according to fund flow tracker EPFR Global.
